He broke his neck on July 5 1974.He was in a car wreck [head-on].He only broke one bone,the fourth cervical on his spinal cord.He was in Indiana,when it happened.They sent him to Chicago to Northwestern Memorial Hospital the very next day. His mother went with him and visited him EVERY day!They could not explain his injuries to her exactly,because he hit his throat on the steering wheel thus breaking the 4-5 cervical bones,and one vocal cord. After many operations he had a cardiac arrest and went in to a coma on August 27th.When he came out of the coma,he could not speak.He used his eyes to communicate.The doctors said to put him in a nursing home,because he would not speak or move at all.His mother said "I will take care of him" [AND SHE DID FOR OVER 17 YEARS].He was in the hospital for 9 months.Then she took him home.She would go to work,then come home,get him up,and rest a little.Then take care of him and put him back to bed.Would you please help by sending donations in care of:DARLENE BURKE 3005 TOMPKINS ST.
